But I want a reminder, my girlfriends s8 keeps a red dot with a number on apps that have unopened texts or other types of messages, even after she opened the app but doesn't check the message. So clearly the problem is either with the pixel 2 or with 8.0. I don't necessarily want numbers but atleast the dot to stay.

Atleast for android, the way I got rid of it was by clicking the message alert in general alerting notifications, the place were all phone alerts show up.
