The long story is that there are some other things that will need to be changed, so having access to a parts truck makes it a lot easier. I bought a ZF core transmission at a wrecking yard for $275.00. It was out of a 89 7.3L. I then switched the housings ( a little tricky but not bad). The problem was in 88 ford switched to a dual mass fly wheel and dampered clutch ( if you don't have it you get excesssive gear noise). 88 is when they started using the ZF 5 speed.

Functionally the transmission performs a it it should, shifts fine in all gears and engaging reverse is not a problem. So I need some ideas as to *** is going on here. This is a junkyard transmission out of a 5.0 F250, with about 3 weeks left on its warranty.

The fix for it is swapping to a s47 trans with the longer input shaft.
