Yesterday I removed the spindle from my South Bend 9" lathe. No big deal. It has only a small set screw on the spindle retaining nut (rear end of spindle) loosen and remove the nut and thrust washer. Carefully drive the spindle out the front end of the headstock and with one hand inside the headstock's pulleyHere are a few more photos of the South Bend Lathe with all the 'items' below the lathe.
