Honestly, I think it was absolutely worth it for me and have never looked back. Sure, you have to be willing to serve and make some compromises -- fewer residency options, get less of a say of where your first attending job will be, and a chance of deployment. But there are a lot of perks.

HPSP is a direct feeder to Army residencies. They have virtually all residencies as on the civ sector. Civilian deferment is rare but only a small percentage of HPSP recipients are selected for it for select residencies. Opinion: if your goal is to be an Army Doctor, apply for HPSP as soon as you enter the application cycle.
