406 sbc vs 383.

To me, if you can make the same power with a 6,000 rpm 406 and a 7,000 rpm 355, then the 355 is more likely to break bottom end parts due to rpm. Now, if you can afford all the best in bottom end parts, then this may not seem big.

The 327 has a 6 3/4 inch balancer and the 408 has an 8 inch. It looks like the 8 inch balancer might be close to the sway bar if installed as is.

Right Jim.. pdq67. Your 327 has a 4 inch bore, so yes, you could make it a 355 or a 383. (also a 302, for that matter). A 1965 327 has a small journal crank, that is a factory "forged" piece. Your engine builder is making a 355 or a 383 by changing the crankshaft to a longer stroke, and replacing the pistons to match.

A 355 of your liking will need deeper gears and a higher stall and should run low 12's in a chevelle. 4:10's and higher will be needed. A 3000 stall limits the car. A 4000 to 5000 stall would be needed to get the most out a car. Old parts and combos can be faster than they were when they were made. Just saying.

my experience with sbc vs bbc. when mildly modified, if you have say a 400" sbc (406-434) and a 400" bbc (396-427) If both engines make the same amount of hp, say a 500 hp 434 sbc and a 500 hp 427, the small block will build more torque than the big block. that contradicts most all beliefs about sbc vs bbc.

You have to compare apples to apples -- with the same brand and type pistons, same brand and type rods. Here's an example that will have you scratch your head.
